A magical diet plan for You

A magical diet plan for You

Know about top 10 antioxidant foods

Know about top 10 antioxidant foods

Do you know that antioxidants can help prevent heart disease and cancer, reduce blood pressure and slow the effects of ageing? These naturally occurring compounds protect the body from excess free radicals, sweeping them up before they can cause damage. And the best way to lay an antioxidant-rich foundation that's inhospitable to toxins and free radicals is through a combination of whole foods.

Berries

They're full of fibre, minerals and vitamins and loaded with healing antioxidants. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are rich in proanthocyanidins, antioxidants that can help prevent cancer and heart disease. Blueberries also appear to delay the onset of age-related loss of cognitive function.

Broccoli

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, can help prevent cancer and ward off heart disease. Cruciferous vegetables contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol  that reduces the risk of breast cancer and other estrogen-sensitive cancers, like cancer of the ovaries and cervix.

Tomatoes

They can ward off certain kinds of cancer, prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. and help maintain mental function. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a relatively rare member of the carotenoid family. Lycopene can help prevent lung, colon and breast cancers. Tomatoes also contain the antioxidant glutathione, which helps boost immune function.

Red Grapes

A little red wine can keep your heart beating longer because of resveratrol and quercetin found in red grapes. These potent antioxidants boost heart health by acting as free-radical scavengers, reducing platelet aggregation and helping blood vessels remain open and flexible. Resveratrol can also protect against cancer and reduce the risk of gastric ulcers and stroke.

Garlic

Garlic is packed with antioxidants that can help fend off cancer, heart disease and the effects of aging. The sulphur compounds that give garlic its pungent odour are thought to be responsible for its healing benefits. Garlic keeps the heart healthy by lowering cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, fighting free radicals and keeping blood from clotting.

Spinach

Spinach Lutein (an antioxidant found in spinach) is the main pigment in the macula–the region of maximum visual sensitivity–it can help protect your vision. People who eat spinach are less likely to develop cataracts and macular degeneration. Lutein appears to work by shielding the retina from sun damage and fighting free radicals that can harm the eyes.

Tea

Tea has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and other diseases. Both green tea and black tea are beneficial. The catechins in green tea are oxidized in the manufacturing process of black tea, forming free-radical fighting theaflavins.

Carrots

Carrots are loaded with a potent antioxidant called beta-carotene, a member of the healing family of carotenoids. Also found in beets, sweet potatoes and other yellow-orange vegetables, beta-carotene provides protection against: cancer, heart disease, and the progression of arthritis by as much as 70 per cent.

Soy

Soy can help prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, ward off osteoporosis and lessen the effects of menopause. Most of the health benefits of soy have been attributed to its content of Genistein and other isoflavones, which resemble natural estrogens in the body. Genistein can help prevent breast, colon and prostate cancers. Soy can reduce both overall cholesterol levels. Soy can also prevent osteoporosis.

Whole Grains Vitamin E in grains is a potent antioxidant that plays a role in preventing cancer. It can boost immunity, slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, treat  arthritis, prevent sunburn and treat male infertility. Grains are rich in phytic acid, known as IP-6, a potent antioxidant that can help protect against breast, colon and liver cancers.

Top 5 Cancer Fighting Foods

Top 5 Cancer Fighting Foods

Several studies have shown that cancer is becoming more and more prevalent among people these days. And while no real cure exists for the disease, there are a number of ways in which the chance of cancer can be reduced. And prevention, as we have always been told, is better than cure. One way of preventing cancer is by eating right. Here are five things that we can eat that can fight cancers in our body.
  1. Green Tea: Green tea is made from the same leaves that ordinary black tea is made from except that it undergoes far fewer processing measures than black tea and still retain most of their anti oxidants. Two powerful antioxidants, known as epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) and epigallocatechin (EGC) are found in green tea  which bind to a protein found on tumour cells and dramatically slow their growth. Green tea helps prevent and even cure somecancers, such as lung, prostate, liver, skin, pancreas and breast.
  2. Cruciferous Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are known to be effective agents in the fight against breast cancer due to the presence of a chemical called indole-3-carbinol, which converts a cancer-creating type of estrogen in the body into a more benign form. Sprouts and broccoli also contain a phytochemical called sulforaphane which helps prevent some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer.
  3. Garlic: The pungent bulb is known to contain chemicals called allium compounds that have immune-enhancing abilities and help increase the activity of immune cells that fight cancer. These chemicals are also effective in slowing down the growth of tumours and block carcinogens in the body.
  4. Mushrooms: Tha Japanese have known the benefits of mushrooms for years. Shiitake, maitake, etc are all mushrooms that contain chemicals called polysaccharides, which have been shown to be excellent immunity builders. They also contain a protein called lectin which attacks cancerous cells and controls their growth.
  5. Chili peppers: Apart from being tasty, chilli peppers and jalapenos contain capsaicin, a compound that is highly effective in neutralising nitrosamines (a cancer-causing substance). They help prevent cancers of the stomach.

Foods to keep you Young

Foods to keep you Young

You can add years to your life simply by making the right food choices. Of course, leading a healthy lifestyle and staying active would help but for delaying the aging process, nothing beats having a nutrient-packed diet rich in antioxidants. The antioxidants destroy cell damaging free radicals of your body and prevent many diseases. This results in delaying the decaying process of the body. Include the following foods in your diet to stay younger for longer.

Olive Oil

It has high content of polyphenols, powerful antioxidant which help to prevent diseases related to age. The monosaturated fats found in olive oil were responsible for low rates of heart disease and less occurrence of cancer on a Greek island known as Crete. There was study called Seven Country Study 40 years ago which concluded that it was due to the good health impact of olive oil.

Organic Milk

If you start taking organic milk instead of regular pasteurised one, it would be much more conducive to have good health. This is because the antioxidants are more in those cows that have been fed on grass or other organic food items. The milk of these cows show 40 to 50 percent more antioxidants compared to conventionally bred cows. Regardless of whether the grains fed to cows are supplemented or not, the cows raised on grass have much more health benefits.

Yoghurt

Having 1 cup of yoghurt gives you as much riboflavin as you find in a cup of boiled spinach. Riboflaving (also called vitamin B) is essential for acting as a catalyst of antioxidant activity. Without its initiation, the glutathione antioxidant is not able to destroy free radicals in the body. It is important that you replenish the body’s need for riboflavin daily because it is water soluble and stays in the body for only a few hours. Yoghurt is just the right food for it.

Natural Sweeteners

If you remove excess sweeteners from your diet and include natural ones such as brown sugar, maple syrup, honey and molasses, it can help you satisfy your sweet tooth without harming your health. The antioxidant content of molasses in particular was found to be very high by researchers of the Virginia Tech University.

Nuts

These are rich in unsaturated fats and have benefits similar to those of olive oil. Apart from that, they also contain vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals which bring down the aging process.

Things you do at Facebook that your Man Dislikes

Things you do at Facebook that your Man Dislikes

There are many things about your Facebook activities that is not liked your guy friends. Men can get irritated by those little things you think to be cute. It would not be good to try to impress your one set of friends while irritate the others (guys).
  • Needless status updates – Some girls post such status update that is intended for only some special friends. Moreover, that update can be understood only by that mate who will post an equally irritating reply. If you are one of these ladies, make sure you opt for the phone to vent your emotions. Facebook is not the place to have private conversations.
  • Strategies to Grab Attention – Just because your Facebook page has not had much activity in the past few days, you must do something to make everyone notice! Messages such as “disappointed”, “so bored”, “yay” are posted just to have others jump to them for replying. Guys just won’t enjoy one of their mates posting an emoticon and her mates jumping in to reply with show of concern. Again, if you are so concerned, give a call by all means.
  • Campaigns – It is nice and good to post about awareness campaigns but that should not be an excuse for letting your social network open to strangers. Moreover, often the comments are suggestive of sexuality. Why give a food for thought to perverts to fuel their imagination.
  • Too many snaps – You might be an “eye candy” but why should you keep emphasising it on your social network. Posting all your pics in all kinds of poses, angles and dresses is not necessary. You also do not need to post the baby’s pic so many times. Think about it, it’s like giving strangers your photo as they can download it from Facebook. Would you ever do that in real life?
  • Girlie giggles – Making kissy faces and exchanging mini hearts on Facebook can make the guys furious. If catching up is what you want, get your phone and give a call. What is the point of getting overly cute online?
It would be nice to make your Facebook profile likeable by everyone. So, if you have been making these mistakes, do reconsider.

Fruit, Vegetables and Ways to Get 5-7 Servings a Day

Do you eat 5-7 servings of fruit and vegetables every single day? It’s hard enough to get one or two servings each day, let alone seven! So what are some ways to do it? And importantly, why do we need to eat that much?

Fruits and vegetables are hugely important for staying healthy and they are a great source of essential nutrients the body needs. They naturally contain fibre, antioxidants, fructose (naturally occurring fruit sugar) and various vitamins, minerals and trace elements. They also tend to be low in fat.

What about the sugar in fruit?

Fruit naturally contains sugar, called fructose, but this shouldn’t be a reason not to eat it. Fruit contains many other great nutrients and the benefit of these out weighs the sugar quantity you’ll get from eating a piece of fruit. But do watch your intake, try to make up your daily requirement with 2-3 servings of fruit and 4-5 of vegetables.

So what are some good ways to hit the ‘magic number’ of fruit and vegetable each day?

  1. Add fruit to shakes and smoothies for a tasty drink
  2. At breakfast, add sliced fruit on your cereal or oats, or sliced tomato or avocado on your toast
  3. Fruit and veg are healthy snacks – snack on a piece of fruit or sliced vegetables sticks such as carrots/celery/peppers (add hummus or salsa for a bit of interest)
  4. Keep the fruit bowl full, you’re more likely to reach for a snack that is readily available in your home or in your bag
  5. Dinner is a good way to increase your vegetable intake. It’s easy to throw extra vegetables into a stir-fry or eat them as a side
  6. Variety in cooking is needed to alleviate boredom. Try something new each day: stir-fry, roast, boil, poach, steam or bake
  7. Although fresh is best, frozen and canned fruit and veg count too. If you choose canned fruit, go for ones without a sugary syrup and that are low in salt and sugar
  8. One glass of unsweetened 100% fruit juice counts as one of your servings
  9. Grow your own. It always seems to taste better when you’ve put the hard work in yourself!
  10. Buy what’s in season – it tastes better and is usually cheaper

So head down to your local farmers’ market, fruit and veg store or supermarket and stock up on healthy, tasty and nutritious fruits and vegetables.

How To Beat Emotional Eating

Are you feeding you stomach, or feeding your feelings? Often the answer is both. We need to eat to fuel the body, but sometimes we eat to satisfy our feelings. It could be particular foods because we’re happy, sad or even bored, but when we eat for reasons other than physical hunger, it’s emotional eating.

Eating when we’re not really hungry is a sure way to add unnecessary calories (and kilos!) that can quickly ruin your weight management programme.

So how do you beat emotion eating? Know the difference and then manage it.

Knowing the difference:

  1. Emotional eating appears suddenly, physical hunger comes on gradually.
  2. Even if you’re full, you’re more likely to keep eating if it’s to satisfy a feeling.
  3. If your stomach is growling for food, you’ll eat almost anything to fill the gap. If you crave a particular food such as ice cream, chocolate or potato crisps, you’re probably eating to feed a feeling.
  4. Emotional eating feels like it you need to eat the food you crave instantly, whereas if it’s physical hunger, it can wait.
  5. You may feel guilty after emotional eating, but if you’re physically hungry you won’t.

Managing emotional eating:

  1. See if you can recognise what feelings cause you to want to eat emotionally.
  2. Take your mind off the craving by doing something else – try going for a walk, do some housework or talk to a friend.
  3. Find a comfort food that’s a healthy alternative, so when the feeling comes you’ve got an option that isn’t junk food.
  4. If you’re on a diet, elimination of all unhealthy foods can do more harm than good. For example, if you can’t live without chocolate, don’t deny yourself completely. Have a small portion, and then put it away. It’s about moderation, not elimination.
  5. Sometimes it’s just a taste you need. So try eating only a few bites. You’re likely to remember the satisfying experience, rather than the guilty feeling after you’ve finished the whole pack!

If you recognise that you’re eating for an emotion, remember that whatever your food choice, learn how to control it and use moderation.

Does a Healthy Breakfast Really make a Difference?

“Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper.” Know this saying? Yes. Live by it? Probably not.

Do you remember as a child your mother saying: ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.’ It’s not an old wives tale; having a good breakfast plays a vital role in leading a healthy life.

When you eat the right foods at breakfast, it sets you up for the day by kick-starting your metabolism, providing a steady stream of energy to keep you going in the morning, plus it can help to manage your appetite – great news if you’re on a diet plan.

Breakfast and metabolism

Metabolism is the physical and chemical processes that create and use energy in the body. The break down of the food we eat and its transformation to energy is a function of metabolism. While you sleep the body’s metabolism slows, as its food supply is deprived and its energy requirements is only for essential bodily functions. So you can imagine, if you don’t eat breakfast, your metabolism stays as this slower rate and doesn’t get that kick-start it needs for the day and to give you more energy.

Breakfast and energy levels

If you try to start the day, without fuelling your body with the right food, you’ll likely to end up crashing mid-morning and reaching for ‘quick fix’ snacks to keep your energy levels topped up. These unhealthy snacks are often high in sugar, high in fat and lack adequate protein. They cause your blood sugar levels to spike and then dramatically drop, meaning your appetite won’t be satisfied for longer than about an hour. You can maintain a steady stream of energy by eating a healthy balanced breakfast, particularly one that provides a good source of protein and complex carbohydrates.

Breakfast to lose weight

Think you lose weight faster by skipping breakfast? Think again. It actually slows your weight loss efforts because it slows your metabolism, a driving force behind your weight loss. But be sure to eat a healthy breakfast – one that’s balanced in key macronutrients such as complex carbohydrates and protein. Including adequate protein for breakfast is especially important as it helps you feel fuller for longer so you’re less likely to crave unhealthy snacks mid-morning.

Need some healthy breakfast ideas?

Eat foods such as wholegrain muesli with nuts, fresh fruit and low fat yoghurt; wholegrain toast topped with eggs and sliced tomato; or oats with skim milk, nuts, seeds and fruit. Watch out for breakfast cereals that are high in sugar, fat and salt.
